Money and Lyrics

I hate to start the new year talking about how to build a budget and why it is important, but what better way to start a new year than with a new budget. RIGHT!! Money is on everyone’s mind all the time. Even many musical artists struggle with money. You can hear it in their lyrics. As Snoop Dogg once proclaimed, “I got my mind on my money and my money on my mind.”

Budgeting allows us not to live beyond what we earn, so we don’t get into trouble with debt. I think the Swedish pop group Abba said it best when they declared, “I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay. Ain’t it sad and still, there never seems to be a single penny left for me.” Many people live paycheck to paycheck and know this feeling well. It’s hard to make a budget when it seems the prices of everything are rapidly rising while your paycheck stays the same.

Instead of complaining about the rising costs of things, you can still live comfortably by making a few adjustments in your budget. Take some time and write down all of the necessary things in your life like rent, bills, gas, groceries and compare them to your income. If you need to make some adjustments think about those bills that are really not needed like cable, internet, Starbucks or maybe that gym membership.

As Oasis said, “Put your money where your mouth is” and see what kind of realistic budget you come up with. You may be surprised at how much extra money you have in the end. I hope everyone has a happy new year!
