Confessions of a Shopaholic

Sitting next to me in class is this guy, with the latest iPhone, or maybe it’s a new laptop. But regardless, I just have to have it. And even though I am a full-time college student, living on a pretty tight income, I must find a way to get it.

Sound familiar? With all those shiny new electronics and other toys on the market, it is hard not to be in debt! It is so easy to walk into a store and swipe a credit card for all the new things I want. But just because I can’t feel the sting of debt yet, does not mean it won’t bite me soon! Building credit is good, but living above my means would indicate something entirely different. Don’t get me wrong- I want all the brand new sparkling things, but as often as electronics alone are updated, getting the newest and the latest could mean buying something new every other day.

So think before swiping. Maybe ask yourself- is this something that will last me? Or do I actually need this? Could I save for this so I don’t have to put it on my credit card? Maybe asking yourself a few questions will save you a few dollars in the end. This technique always works for me. Yeah, having that shiny new toy would have been nice… but staying debt free is definitely more beneficial.
