To Catch a Predatory Lender
Posted on October 4, 2009Remember when you were a kid and your parents said to stay away from strangers? Remember how that advice kept you safe? Well kids, I have some advice for you that’s kind of similar. Stay away from predatory lenders. You know the people. They like to hang around your campus promising you gifts if you sign up for a credit card. These people are everywhere not just on campus during your welcome week. They’re at your favorite clothing or electronic store trying to get you to sign up for their credit card with the promise of 10% off your favorite jeans…wow 10%! Thanks!
So what are some of the things you can do to get them to leave you alone? You can’t just scream and run away like you did when you were a kid…well, you could but people may look at you funny. You can first and foremost tell them NO. There is no problem with saying those words. You won’t hurt their feelings and you won’t have to sign up for something you don’t want. Remember, if an offer sounds to good to be true, it usually is.
They’ll also try to get to you at your home with piles and piles of junk mail. How do you make them stop? Opt-out. A great site that provides information on how to do this can be found here. You can opt-out for up to five years or permanently. And if you ever want to start having the mail come back you can always opt-in again.
Just remember to be smart against these predatory lenders and use your head. Do you have any other cool hints or suggestion on how to stop predatory lending? If you do, please leave a comment below.
