The Incredible Bulk
Posted on October 13, 2008Remember when everyone was freakin’ out about Y2K? The world was going to end and everybody was buying up all the bottled water and canned goods? People were digging holes to store their goods. A lot of people believed the hype and followed the advice of the artist formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known As Prince and “(partied) like it’s 1999!”
I just sat and watched the shelves being emptied and saw some folks acting very nice to each other because they were afraid that they’d no longer see them again. No one seemed to realize that the grocery and retail stores were making big profit off of the hysteria.
Nowadays when I shop I buy less than everybody did for Y2K, but more than what I need to have on hand. This saves on gas and means lower overall cost for the necessities that I use on a daily basis.
I love Sam’s! A lot of people think that it’s just for small business and it’s not. It helps to buy in bulk. Yeah, you get more than you need, but it makes sense: the more (quantity) you buy the less (often) you buy, know what I’m saying?
I don’t know about you but if I go to the store for one or two items, I get back to my house and discover that I’ve spent $50 on stuff that I didn’t need. So instead of buying the 6 roll of toilet paper, I’ll buy the 12 or 24 roll. ‘cause you know there’s no way that 6 roll is gonna last you anywhere close to 2 weeks!
Something that’s really helped me is this: I keep a list posted on the fridge and I stick with it. And I only use cash when I shop. Having cash on hand helps me to spend less since I see the money leaving my hand. Therefore, I have much less of an urge to impulse buy. I love to eat and that’s where all my money goes, so I never, ever go to the store hungry! Otherwise, I’m gonna wind up buying way more food than I need.
(Although it’s okay to go into Sam’s hungry – you can eat a full meal just on their free samples!)
So what do you guys think? Anybody out there makin’ like a squirrel before winter? And who else is addicted to Sam’s “tapas?”
